Fraser Coast council sinks $1m into push for HMAS Tobruk to be scuttled near Hervey Bay

A Wide Bay federal MP says the campaign to sink a decommissioned Australian Navy vessel between Hervey Bay and Bundaberg has taken a significant step forward.

Fraser Coast council has allocated $1 million to sink HMAS Tobruk to create a military dive site for recreational divers.

The Member for Hinkler, Keith Pitt, said having the support of local councils helped strengthen his case to the Government for the tourist attraction.

“It certainly makes it easier to argue the case in Canberra,” he said.

“I’ve had a number of meetings not only with Prime Ministers and defence ministers but pretty much everybody I can find.

“We have lots of senators on board, we have a lot of support down here and we need to continue to build the case for Tobruk to be sunk in Hervey Bay.

“The Tobruk as a dive wreck in our local region will add to our tourism economy.

“It will build on the existing infrastructure. It is an announcement that is good for jobs.”
