Elected as a Liberal at four elections, Kelly resigned from the party and became and Independent in February 2021, later joining the Unite Australia Party.

Despite easily retaining Hughes since his first election, Craig Kelly has had less control over pre-selection numbers in factionally divided local Liberal Party branches. In 2016 Malcolm Turnbull used Prime Ministerial authority to stamp out attempts to defeat Craig Kelly for pre-selection, an action repeated by Scott Morrison in 2019. Action to again protect Kelly from his branches was short circuited in early 2021 when Kelly resigned from the Liberal Party, subsequently joining Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party.
