After involvement in student politics and a period as a political staffer, Wilson started a six year tenure as a policy director at free market think-tank the Institute for Public Affairs. During this time, he held positions on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency’s Nursing and Midwifery Board and at Alfred Health. He was also recognised by Same Same as one of Australia’s 25 most influential gay and lesbian Australians in 2010. Under some controversy, Wilson was appointed Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner in 2014. Wilson resigned from the position in 2016 to seek Liberal pre-selection for Goldstein. He has a Masters of Diplomacy and Trade and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University, and has completed executive education at the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Development in Geneva and the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s Worldwide Academy. Wilson is remembered for proposing to marry his partner, at the time sat in the Parliamentary Gallery, while making a speech in the final passage of the same-sex marriage legislation. Wilson has been Assistant Minister to the Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction since October 2021.
